5 Seconds of Summer (5SOS) are a four-piece boy band that originates from Australia. Their music genre consists of pop punk and pop rock. The members include Michael Clifford, Luke Hemmings, Calum Hood and Ashton Irwin.

All of the boys are on vocals in the group but Luke Hemmings is known as the lead vocals of the group but he also plays the guitar alongside members Michael Clifford and Calum Hood while Ashton Irwin plays the drums.

The boy band firstly debuted as a three-piece boy band by doing covers on YouTube. They debuted around December 2011 before they met Ashton Irwin. As well as the start of the group; drummer, Ashton Irwin, also joined them and that’s how the completed band came around.

The band has said to already have stardom thus alluring the interests of numerous major record labels and publishers in Australia who wanted to sign them on but then they eventually got a publishing deal with Sony ATV Music Publishing. The group mainly relied on promotion from social media such as Facebook and Twitter. Their first ever music released was an EP called ‘Unplugged’ which charted number 3 on the iTunes chart in Australia. They have worked with a few popularly named artists such as McFly and Scouting for Girls.

The group’s popularity in both the music industry and the celebrity world was boosted with the help of One Direction member Louis Tomlinson who gave recognition to one of their song ‘Gotta Get Out’. Niall Horan who is also a member of One Direction gave recognition on twitter for one of their video clips. With the help of promotion from One Direction members on social media; it boosted their popularity on a massive scale since One Direction are one of the biggest boy bands in the 21st century.

Not only did One Direction give them more attention on-line but they also had 5 Seconds of Summer to participate in their worldwide album tour. They were the opening act for the famous boy band, which was a huge way of promoting them and their music. They played at such iconic arenas such as the O2 arena in London. After being recognized more in the music industry from touring with One Direction; the music the boy band have been releasing has started to become favourable tunes of the public ever since also becoming official signed to the record label ‘Capitol’.

Their first debut album as an official instrument and vocal boy band was called ‘5 Seconds of Summer’ which was released in the summer of 2014 for Europe and Australia. Their first single released was ‘She Looks So Perfect’ which became their first UK number-one single.


2014 was really the debuting year for the Australian boy band since they were only releasing their first few singles and their debut album. The year has also given them opportunities at being nominated at awards, which led to them winning some such as an Teen Choice Award for ‘Choice Music: Breakout Group’ in 2014. They’ve recently just won a People’s Choice Awards for ‘Favourite Breakout Artist’ in 2015. It has been announced that they will once again be supporting One Direction on their latest worldwide tour ‘Where We Are’.

Since these all have different subjects in order to advertise their product; they will have different connotations from their posters.
